Golf Croquet Singles Tournament

CORNWALL CROQUET CLUB GOLF CROQUET SINGLES TOURNAMENT

The Cornwall Croquet Club's annual Singles Handicap Golf Croquet Tournament took place at Porthpean over the weekend Saturday & Sunday September 5th & 6th. Sixteen members took to the lawns in two blocks of eight; each player having to play seven games to the best of thirteen hoops. Competition was fierce, with over half the fifty-six matches ending with opponents within two points of each other. Competitors were a mixture of new and not-so-new members; the handicapping system giving the former a reasonable chance against the latter. However, at the end of the block programme Stephen Read headed the one block, with Marjorie Stewart just one point behind, while Elizabeth Schofield won the second block by just half a point from Tony Jennings. The final was close throughout. The third hoop took nearly twenty minutes to run, with some brilliant defensive play by both players before Elizabeth ran it with a long shot, after Stephen had just failed to block the hoop. Elizabeth managed to keep just ahead for most of the time, but they completed hoop 10 at five hoops each. As they approached hoop 11 the time ran out, but Elizabeth managed to run it with the second of her four turns allowed after the bell. Stephen was equal to this as he ran hoop 12 with the last of his extension turns. The golden hoop beckoned, with Elizabeth having the first approach shot. A well-placed shot put her ball three yards above the hoop; but she had a handicap turn in hand, which she used to get closer to the hoop. Stephen had a long shot to move her ball but missed narrowly, allowing Elizabeth to win the hoop. So! An exciting game came to end and Elizabeth was presented with the trophy by Joyce Wilson and Lynda Everett. The event was organised, managed and refereed by Ron George.

The Daphne Jennings Memorial Short Lawn Association Tournament

CORNWALL CROQUET CLUB TOURNAMENT REPORT

Des Honey does it again

The Daphne Jennings Memorial Short Lawn Association Croquet Tournament August 22nd 23rd

15 members of the Cornwall Croquet Club competed for the Jennings Trophy on a rather damp Saturday & Sunday. The format of the tournament was to play 14 point games on half size lawns time limited to 1hr 15 mins. The players were arranged in 2 blocks. The players in each block all played each other, the winner of each block then played in the final. The competition was very tight  the block winners not emerging until the final 2 rounds. Malcolm Hooper & Des Honey winning the blocks to play in the final.
In the final Malcolm went in first placing his 2 balls on the east boundary, Des having placed his first ball near hoop 2 sent his 2nd ball to the east boundary near Malcolm's 2 balls took one of his bisques(extra turns in handicap play) & proceeded to take his ball round to the peg. Malcolm not managing to get in allowed Des to take his 2nd ball round to the peg & peg out,
winning 14 to 0.
Des Honey played a classic game demonstrating how a higher handicap player can take on one with a much lower handicap & by using his bisques(extra turns) carefully win.

PS Des Honey also won the Read Trophy with another classic display(Aug 9th).

Faith, Hoop and Hilarity

FAITH, HOOP AND HILARITY SATURDAY JULY 25th

The lawns at the Cornwall Croquet Club were crowded last Saturday for the annual Faith, Hoop and Hilarity event. Newer members were paired with established members to give the former a taste of competitive croquet in a relaxed atmosphere. Golf croquet was played in four sections of either three or four pairs, with each pair playing two games. Each game was played to the best of nineteen hoops, or one hour, with the winners of each group playing semi-finals to determine the finalists. All the games were closely contested and the section winners did not emerge until the final games had finished. The semi-finalists were separated by only a single hoop in each of the two games: however the eventual finalists were Marjorie Stewart & Russell Moore playing Gill Shaw & Des Honey. The match was closely fought but, at the bell, Marjorie & Russell were the winners.
The semi-finalists were Margaret Read & Lynda Lang v Des Honey & Gill Shaw.  Elizebeth Schofield & Chris Clark v Russell Moore & Marjorie Stewart

Throughout the day there were side games in which the pairs could practice their skills by either playing croquet balls onto a target, or rushing/peeling them through various hoops. At the end of the day, those with the stamina played a game of Porthpean Chase, which involved running as many hoops as possible in a given time, but with the possibility of stealing, or losing, accumulated points by hitting, or being hit by, other players’ balls. The day finished with tea and a quiz on book titles. The weather was fine throughout the day, allowing spectators to sit out in the sunshine.  Twenty eight members took part. Before presenting the prizes, The club’s President, Howard Rosevear, thanked all those who had helped to organise the very successful and enjoyable event.

The winners were, Golf Croquet – Marjorie Stewart & Russell Moore; Target Croquet – Kathleen Moorshead & Leslie Stewart; Promorush – Jean Wehurle & Stephen Read; Porthpean Chase – Peter Dexter; Quiz – Linda Lang.

Golf Croquet Doubles

Cornwall Croquet Club Golf-Croquet Doubles Tournament July 11th/12th

Saturday's drizzle, which later turned to persistent rain, could not dampen the spirits of the eight pairs of players competing for the Golf-Croquet Doubles Cup at the Porthpean lawns of the Cornwall Croquet Club. The teams were well matched, with none making the running. At the end of the day, three teams shared the lead with a further two only half a point behind. Each team played each other, in a best-of-nineteen-hoops game, with a time limit of an hour and a half: making seven games per pair to be played over two days. Sunday's weather was a big improvement on the previous day; there being mainly broken sunshine with a couple of light showers - certainly nothing to trouble the competitors. There were some unexpected results, during the day, and the final winners did not emerge until the final ball of the last game in progress. Des and Liz Honey needed a win to emerge as outright winners, but when time was called they were one hoop down with just two shots per ball to come. With the very last ball Liz ran the eighteenth hoop to tie the game. The only team that could beat them won its last game and tied with the Honeys at 5 1/2 points each. In the event of a tie, the team that won the game between them is adjudged to have won the tournament. Unfortunately for the Honeys, they lost their match with Elizabeth Schofield and Tony Jennings, who were presented with the cup by Ron George, the club chairman, who was also manager and referee for the tournament.
